Protesters gather at Union Buildings

2010-11-16 11:30

About 400 taxi drivers protesting against the traffic demerit system converged on the Union Buildings to hand over a memorandum of grievances.

The march through Pretoria’s central business district briefly halted traffic in the city centre. It was peaceful with no reports of violence.

There was a strong police and media presence. The SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) is demanding that government withdraw the new licensing system saying that it would cause their members untold hardship and a loss of jobs.

Satawu is demanding that the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act (Aarto) legislation be repealed.

The system penalises drivers with demerit points for traffic offences.

Once a driver has 12 demerit points, his or her driver’s licence gets suspended for three months. A driver’s licence gets cancelled on the third suspension.
