Pupils suspended after initiation leaves schoolboy in intensive care

2013-02-04 09:15

Seven pupils have been suspended from a Western Cape high school hostel after an initiation which put a schoolboy in intensive care.

The York High School pupils in George would face a disciplinary hearing tomorrow, the Cape Times reported.

Andrew Searle (14) was hit on the head on Tuesday and rushed to hospital. His father Sean Searle said at the time that a group of boys entered the school’s dormitory, where his son was sleeping, and hit him once on the leg and the side of the head.

“It is what they call a dormitory raid. It was not sanctioned by the school,” Searle said.

“About an hour later, he experienced severe head pains and asked his friends to call the housemaster.”

Searle was still recovering in hospital.

According to the report, the family had decided not to open a criminal case or take any action, calling it “a very unfortunate incident”.
