R200 000 for a national record

2011-02-08 10:56

A R200 000 carrot has been dangled before the track and field athletes who set a new national record in their respective disciplines.

This was announced at the launch of the 2011 Yellow Pages Series in Fourways, Johannesburg, today.

Outlining the sponsors’ involvement in the event themed “Pot of Gold” Lionel Smith, general manager: marketing of Trudon – publishers of Yellow Pages, said: “athletes have a chance to cash in setting new records.”

“We want to take the track and field to another level,” said Smith.

The domestic season takes off with the Yellow Pages Series I at McArthur Stadium in Potchefstroom, North West next Saturday (February 19).

The campaign will culminate in the SA Championships – junior and senior – in April.

The meetings will also see the return of women’s 800m world champion Caster Semenya to the local track.

With 2011 being the year of the World Athletics Championship, local athletes will also be expected to attain the standard entry marks to join Team SA at the Korea event in August and September.
