RAF to help Free State crash victims

2011-05-26 14:36

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) will help to the families of six people who died when the vehicle they were travelling in landed in the Vaal Dam in the Free State on Monday night, transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele announced.

The Opel Corsa Lite in which the six family members were travelling smashed through the railings on the bridge over the Vaal Dam at Oranjeville and landed in the water.

Yesterday, the car containing six bodies was pulled out of the Vaal Dam.

The victims were heading back to Vereeniging and Sebokeng after their grandmother’s funeral at Tugela Ferry in KwaZulu-Natal when the accident happened.

Officials from the RAF have already been dispatched to render help, Ndebele said.

“We want to convey our condolences to the families of those killed in this tragic incident,” Ndebele said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them all during these difficult moments.”

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has also assigned an independent team of accident investigation and reconstruction specialists to assist in this culpable homicide investigation.

“During this Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, we call upon all South Africans to strengthen the global movement that is demanding real action against road deaths, and save thousands of lives and billions of rands”, the minister said.
