Rail angency faces countrywide strike

2010-05-13 12:40

Train commuters will be left stranded from next week when two major

transport unions go on strike in a wage dispute with the Passenger Rail Agency

of SA (Prasa), union officials said today.

The SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) and the United

Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) informed the employer today of the

strike action.

“It is going to cause huge disruptions and we want to apologise to

commuters in advance,” said Utatu general secretary Chris de Vos.

He said about two million commuters rely on trains every day.

Both Satawu and Utatu have rejected a 5% wage increase offer from

Prasa.

“No attempts have been made by management to meet Satawu in the

last seven days,” Satawu said.

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration issued a

certificate of non-resolution last Thursday.

“Satawu is demanding 16% across the board. Satawu will be serving a

48 hours notice to Prasa today informing them of our intention to embark on a

legal and protected strike action on Monday,” the Satawu statement said.

Prasa operates Metrorail, Shosholoza Meyl and Autopax bus

services.

Satawu and Utatu were already involved in strike action against

Transnet this week.

Transnet operates in five divisions: freight rail, rail

engineering, ports, port terminals and pipelines.
