Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund is confident his team will do the country proud at next month’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Outlining his plans for the tournament today, Igesund was optimistic about their chances of reaching the knockout stages.

He was, however, cautious about setting himself targets saying they would take one game at a time.

After missing out on the previous two editions of the tournament in 2010 and this year, pressure is on Bafana to do well when hosting the event in January.

In fact, Igesund’s mandate from his employer, Safa, is to at least reach the semifinal.

“The mandate is tough but achievable. We need everyone to rally behind the team and give us the support and we promise we will do our best,” said Igesund.

But the odds are stacked heavily against the former multiple league-winning coach as he is still trying to assemble a team.

First on his preparation list is a game against Malawi on December 22 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Igesund said he did not have the luxury of time on his side as he would only have one training session before the game against the Flames.

“I have about 17 players on my list but it is too early to say who is in and who is not. I will probably have about 30 players in camp as I have not made up my mind about the final team selection.”

He also said young Ayanda Patosi, who plays for Belgian side Lokeren, could get a call up.

Bafana have also pencilled a friendly against Norway on January 8 in Cape Town. Igesund will announce his 23-man squad for the tournament after the game.

The team will wrap its preparations with a friendly against Algeria on January 12 at Orlando Stadium.

Bafana will open their Afcon campaign against Cape Verde on January 19 at the FNB Stadium.
