Struggle heavyweight Mamphela Ramphele has not ruled out the possibility of entering politics, but said she would make announcements about that herself.

In a statement issued today, Ramphele said she “will speak on my own behalf about any decisions I might take about my future engagements”.

She did not deny reports that she was planning to enter politics or start a new political party.

City Press revealed on Sunday that Ramphele was raising funds abroad to start a new political party.

Subsequent reports said she planned to launch the party in February, in the week leading up to President Jacob Zuma’s state of the nation address on Valentine’s Day.

In a press release today, Ramphele said she “noted” press reports speculating about her intention to form a political party.

She admitted to having had “conversations with South Africans from all walks of life about the state of democracy in South Africa, canvassing their views about ways in which South Africans can work together to tackle our pressing social, economic and political challenges”.

She said the conversations “are in line with the national dialogue I am seeking to promote through my latest book, Conversations with my Sons and Daughters”.

The DA has previously unsuccessfully tried to woo Ramphele, who is close to party leader Helen Zille and who has helped write DA policy documents in the past.
