Rape-accused wrestles cops in court after magistrate postpones case

2014-03-10 17:21

A man accused of raping two girls wrestled with police officers during his appearance in the Nelspruit Regional Court.

The 19-year-old man, who cannot be named until he has pleaded guilty, allegedly raped two girls aged seven and 10. The Magistrate, Willie Wilkins postponed the case to May 6 and then to June 12 for further police investigations. The accused said he was sick and would die if taken back into custody.

When a police officer attempted to remove him from the dock, he said: “I want to talk to the magistrate. Do not touch me. I do not want to go.”

When the officer attempted to remove him a second time, the man leapt towards the magistrate. The officer grabbed him but the accused wrestled with the officer, pinning him to the ground.

A second police officer, who tried to help was also overpowered.

When court officials tried to help the police officers, the man repeatedly hit his head against a wall until it began to bleed.

He was taken back into police custody.
