Rape or extortion?: The email

2013-07-28 14:00

Zwelinzima Vavi’s accuser sent him a damning email in which she insisted he had raped her and warned him that her husband was a “loose cannon”.

In the email the 26-year-old woman told Vavi that she had on numerous occasions told him that she was not happy about what had occurred between them, insisting that it was rape.

“I was not happy about that day, the day in question is the day when you came into my office and forced yourself on me. I told you to stop and I told you the same again when you requested that we meet that I was upset about what happened to a point where you asked me what it is that you could do to change the way I felt,” said the woman in the email.

She denied having an affair with him even though Vavi has maintained that since October last year they had had one involving “kissing and hugging.”

“What happened in my office is called RAPE!!! I recognise it as I was raped at the age of 14, I so badly wanted to not feel the same thing had happened again, that I was not worthy of being respected for my beauty and that sex is not the only thing men see in me when they look at me,” she said in her grievance.

But Vavi has countered these claims saying that the woman wrote the email after his wife Noluthando sent an sms to her husband to say that he should listen to Vavi’s side of the story.

“Complainant’s husband angrily denied this and defended his wife who he claimed was being made out to be a liar,” countered Vavi in his statement to Cosatu.
