Real Madrid’s Jose Zarraga dies

2012-04-04 11:15

Real Madrid says former great Jose Maria Zarraga, who helped the Spanish powerhouse to a record five straight European Cups, has died.

Zarraga, who was 81, played in midfield in a team that included Alfredo di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas. That revered team won the European Cup every year between 1956-60, six Spanish league titles and an Intercontinental Cup.

During his stay at Madrid, Zarraga scored 96 goals in 306 appearances. He joined the club in 1949 before breaking into the first team two years later.

He left the club in 1962 at age 32.

Madrid says they will hold a minute of silence in honour of Zarraga today at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium ahead of their Uefa Champions League second leg quarterfinal match against APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus.
