Reality too much for Jub Jub

2010-02-03 11:40

JUB Jub has turned his

back on his teammates. The local musician, who was a contestant on M-Net’s

reality TV show Survivor, decided to walk off the series after getting a rash on

his legs and penis. His words to host Nico Panagio when he walked off the

island of Santa Carolina in Mozambique were: “My manhood is more important to

me than this game.”

It all sounds

very dramatic.

“Basically what

happened is that I got an infection on my legs which spread up. There was no

proper sanitation on the island and the sand and the water probably caused it.

Although I did get medical attention it didn’t really help because the longer I

stayed out there, the worse it got. My life comes first,” said the star, whose

real name is Molemo Maarohanye.

Jub Jub’s

departure after just two episodes into the show added to the drama following the

departure of fellow team member, Christina Storm, who walked off the island in

the first episode because she “simply missed her daughter too much”.

While Jub Jub

made it clear on the island that he was not happy with her decision to leave the

team he said he didn’t really have a problem with her leaving.

“Christina

wanted to leave for the sake of her daughter and I respected that decision. You

can’t force someone to stay, and I realise that it’s like being in a

relationship when you are out there – as much as you love people you can’t force

them to stay.”

The harsh

realities of the island are no joke. So before you judge, think about living out

there on a remote island with no water, no food, no shelter, torrential storms

and a severe lack of sanitation with a group of people you don’t really know.

The question

remains though: Didn’t Jub Jub know what he was getting himself into? Apparently

not.

The islander,

who once lived the lavish life in the hallways of LaGuardia High School in New

York (on which the movie Fame was based) as the first black student from Africa,

felt that the Survivor experience was all a bit too much for him. He admits that

he had never been a fan of the Survivor series. “I would catch glimpses of my

brother watching it but never bought into the whole thing. Had I watched the

series before I would’ve known what it was all about. And I probably would’ve

known what to expect. But I didn’t.”
