Reburial of Khoisan couple set for next month

2012-07-05 15:17

The reburial of the Khoisan couple whose remains were repatriated from Austria earlier this year will take place on August 12.

This is according to Shane Christians, a researcher at the Northern Cape department of arts and culture.

The remains of Klaas and Trooi Pienaar arrived in South Africa three months ago after four years of negotiations between the Austrian and South African governments.

The couple’s bodies were illegally exhumed from their graves on the farm Pienaarsput in the Kuruman district in Northern Cape and shipped to Austria for racial research.

Shane Christians was part of the group of representatives from the national and provincial departments that negotiated the reburial of the remains with descendants of the Pienaar couple.

According to a statement by the national department of arts and culture, the remains of the couple are kept in a morgue until the reburial.
