Ref Gomes steals the show as Downs win

Mamelodi Sundowns scored one penalty and missed two as they beat Ajax Cape Town 3-2 at Loftus last night.

Referee Victor Gomes caused some controversy as he handed out five penalties during the match – two to Ajax and three to Sundowns – which enabled the Brazilians to narrow the gap on log leaders Kaizer Chiefs to six points.

Sundowns should have been 1-0 up inside the first four minutes, but Teko Modise couldn’t convert from the penalty spot.

Thabo Nthethe broke the deadlock just before the half-hour point. Five minutes later, a second penalty was handed to the Brazilians and Katlego Mashego converted from the spot.

The half ended with a penalty in favour of Ajax, and Nathan Paulse made it 2-1 heading into the interval. Penalty number four was awarded in favour of Sundowns in the 55th minute, but Mashego’s effort hit the crossbar.

Sundowns found the back of the net again and this time it was Anthony Laffor who beat the Ajax keeper with a strike at the near post.

Ajax were handed their second penalty because of a handling offence off a free-kick and substitute Lance Davids converted deep in stoppage time.
