Bafana Bafana will most likely have to beat Nigeria on Sunday to qualify for the knockout stages of the African Nations Championship (Chan).

This after they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Mali at the Cape Town Stadium today.

Bernard Parker scored from the penalty spot after Cameroonian referee Souley Mohamadou awarded the home team a dubious penalty in the first half.

But Mali came back strongly in the second 45 minutes to force the equaliser through Ibourahima Sidibe. Mali would have been happy with the draw as they fancy their chances against Mozambique on Sunday while Bafana have a tricky one against the Super Eagles.

Mohamadou stole the show in today’s game as he made some home decisions to help Bafana. Firstly he failed to send off Itumeleng Khune when the goalkeeper clearly fouled Abdoulaye Sissoko in the box.

Instead of awarding the penalty, he gave a corner. But he was quick to point to the spot when Bafana live-wire Lindokuhle Mbatha was brought down outside the box.

Bafana coach Gordon Igesund was cautious in his approach as, at one stage in the game, he deployed three defensive midfielders, a decision which starved off his strike force. Parker was left to fend for himself alone in front as attempts dried up.

But this was a good game of football as both teams went hammer and tong at each other but at the end had to settle for the draw.
