Reitz Four sentencing delayed

2010-07-30 08:47

The sentencing of the four former University of Free State students known as the Reitz Four was delayed this morning.

Chief Magistrate Mziwonke Hinxa told the court that a crucial document has reached his office and that the defence and the state would first have to discuss this in chambers.

State prosecutor Johan Kruger also confirmed that he had these documents and that it was best to adjourn for a short time to discuss it in chambers.

Hinxa then adjourned the court for them to meet in his chambers.

The Reitz Four – RC Malherbe, Johnny Roberts, Schalk van der Merwe and Danie Grobler – on Tuesday pleaded guilty to a charge of crimen injuria.

The charges relate to their humiliating five black workers in an initiation-type ceremony in 2007, which they filmed while living at the University of the Free State’s now-closed men’s Reitz residence.
