Removal of FS speaker ‘aimed at better service delivery’

2012-11-07 06:49

The removal of the speaker for the Free State Legislature, Moeketsi Sesele, is the result of a restructuring process aimed at better service delivery, the ANC in the province has said.

ANC provincial spokesperson Oupa Khoabane denied that the move was politically motivated, saying that the legislature was lagging behind in its activities.

A report by the Portfolio Committee on Public Accounts on a meeting that took place in April was, for example, only tabled during the last week in October.

Legislature spokesperson Jongi Ndakana said that although Sesele was removed as speaker he would stay on as a member of the legislature.

The ANC would therefore have to appoint a member of the legislature as new speaker or create a vacancy in the legislature to appoint someone from the outside.

Khoabane dismissed rumours that the former MEC for economic development, Mxolisi Dukwana, might be dropped in favour of an outsider.

Dukwana, who is still a member of the legislature, was charged with bringing the ANC in disrepute for not attending the provincial ANC conference that took place earlier this year in Parys.

He was associated with a faction in the party that called itself the Regime Change Group.

“We are still awaiting the outcome of Dukwana’s disciplinary hearing and cannot act before knowing the outcome,” said Khoabane.
