President Jacob Zuma does not have to give reasons for the changes he made in a Cabinet reshuffle, the presidency has said.

“The presidency has noted complaints from some media houses and commentators that President Jacob Zuma did not provide reasons when announcing changes to the national executive (yesterday).

“The presidency wishes to remind the opinion makers that the president of the republic uses his prerogative when appointing members to the national executive,” spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement today.

“He does not need to provide reasons.”

Zuma announced a Cabinet reshuffle yesterday afternoon, axing three ministers – Communications Minister Dina Pule, Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale, and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Richard Baloyi.

Transport Minister Ben Martins became the new energy minister, swapping portfolios with Dipuo Peters.

Zuma also appointed four new deputy ministers.

Maharaj said the new Cabinet members would be sworn in at the Union Buildings at 3pm today.

Earlier, union federation Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi also said Zuma does not owe anyone an explanation.

“The president has a prerogative to make any decision in relation to the cabinet,” Vavi told SAfm.

“After all, this is about his own performance and he [Zuma] needs to go to the public next year and account as a president in terms of what he has or has not done to pursue the goal of building a better life for all.”
