Residents buy town water pump

2011-03-24 14:09

Residents of Dealesville in the Free State today decided to privately foot the bill for a new water pump to supply the town with running water.

AfriForum spokesperson on local government Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg said the pump worth about R20 000 was installed on a water borehole of the Tokologo municipality.

“Residents took service delivery into their own hands.”

Jansen van Rensburg said residents bought the borehole pump and installed it to ensure the town had a normal supply of water.

Residents in the past had to battle constant water-supply problems.

Jansen van Rensburg said it was obvious that the Tokologo municipality did not have the capacity to deliver services to the community.

AfriForum, in December last year, took the Tokologo municipality to court to force them to supply water.

However, an agreement was reached outside of court that the water-supply problems to the town would be solved.

Jansen van Rensburg said the water supply returned to normal for a short while, but now the situation had returned to conditions before the court application.

He warned the municipality not to relax just because residents did something to ensure basic service delivery.

“We will help the residents get their money back from the municipality,” Jansen van Rensburg said.
