Residents up in arms over power and water

2011-04-23 22:03

Residents of a Gauteng township burned tyres in protest against power and water cuts today.

Apparently, the community of Klipfontein View, in Midrand, had been without water and electricity since Thursday.

The community braved the chilly weather to also raise concerns over the township’s waste that had not been collected for the past two weeks.

A Klipfontein View resident who refused to be named for fear of intimidation said the power and water cuts had affected the community badly.

“Our lives just became disorganised because we could not iron our clothes and had nothing to wear for work,” she said.

“We were also forced to survive on take-aways and the worst thing is that this happened while most of us have not been paid our salaries,” she said.

She said the situation was messy and smelly because they could not flush toilets and wash dishes.

The protesters had dispersed by this evening because the water and electricity supply had been restored.

A group of about seven police officers stood near burning tyres and monitored the situation at the corner of Allandale Road and Fascine Street last night.

They referred enquiries to the police spokesperson who could not be reached for comment.
