Africa Cup of Nations winning midfielder John Lesiba “Shoes” Moshoeu has died.

His business manager, Glyn Binkin, confirmed that the legendary player, aged 49, died at about 3pm today after a long battle with cancer.

The personal life of the legendary Bafana Bafana midfielder was never really in the spotlight, but news about his ill health broke late last year when he was admitted to hospital for emergency surgery.

It turned out that he had colon cancer, those who were close to him said at the time.

Moshoeu’s health deteriorated and he was admitted to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital early this year.

Moshoeu came into prominence with the now defunct Giant Blackpool in the early 80s.

His profile was raised when he joined Kaizer Chiefs in the early 90s. He went on to represent Bafana 78 times, and scored eight goals, between 1993 and 2004.

Although Moshoeu was born in Diepkloof, Soweto, his roots can be traced to Alexandra where his mother Reena still resides.

Shoes used to own a local amateur club, Vodacom League side Alexandra United, where he doubled as owner and coach.
