A fried-chicken business has been opened across the road from the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, where Oscar Pistorius will today stand trial for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

The road outside the high court is lined with broadcast vans, scaffolding and shade shelters (gazebos) set up by international journalists covering the trial.

Another new addition to the pavement outside the high court is Dros Fried Chicken, which was open for business early on this damp Pretoria morning.

A throng of journalists packed the area outside the high court, while the opposite side of the road is lined with photographers and cameramen.

Pistorius will today come face to face with June Steenkamp, Reeva’s mother, who told Independent Newspapers that she had especially chosen her seat because she wanted Pistorius to look her in the eyes.

Lawyers representing Pistorius have been tight-lipped about any potential housekeeping applications that could stall the trial, such as a dispute over whether the defence has been furnished with all the particulars necessary for him to plead.

If the trial is to go ahead, Pistorius will officially have to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty.

The state is reportedly expected to begin by calling witnesses from Pistorius’ plush estate, east of the city, where Reeva was shot last February.
