Robber missing after jumping off promenade

2010-09-28 10:58

A house robber is missing after he jumped over a wall on the beachfront promenade in Sea Point, Cape Town, today, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

The NSRI was called out at 3.30am to assist police when it was thought the man had jumped into the water and was possibly swept out to sea, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

The NSRI stopped searching at 6.30am when no one was found on the beach or in the water.

Lambinon said the likelihood of the man being swept out to sea was slim as it was low tide.

Warrant Officer Bheki Xulu said the police were still searching for the robber.

“We are checking all hospitals but we think he might still be hiding in the rocks.”

The man and an accomplice tried to break into a flat in Sea Point last night.

The accomplice (18) was arrested after residents of the flat chased him, Xulu said.
