FAMILIAR FACES: The new season of Rockville sees some key characters played by new actors

Some poor acting, but promising

Season three of the Shona and Connie Ferguson-produced drama series Rockville began with a bang two Sundays ago. It seems there is no stopping the celebrity couple, who also recently gave us The Gift, a made-for-TV film that captured the imagination of Mzansi Magic viewers with its family oriented story line.

Once again, social media went wild over the new season of Rockville, especially over Connie as the struggling single mother Mavis Mabaso and Shona as the dodgy pimp.

But two episodes in, there are acting problems. Rockville newbie Terry Pheto comes across as ill-prepared for the role of JB’s wife, Dudu, played by Bonnie Mbuli with aplomb in the past seasons. Frankly, I think Phetho’s massive weave may have something to do with her lack of poise in front of the camera.

Even Hlomla Dandala failed to ignite the fireworks for me. I wasn’t at all convinced by his handling of his character, who is supposed to be a dark, twisted and hardened criminal.

Brenda Ngxoli, who plays Gladys the neighbourhood drunk, is getting ever more over the top and is ruining the character for me, screeching when she is drunk. I prefer her when she’s sober and enticing Bra Ali to take note of her booty.

But the first two episodes are promising, giving us plenty to look forward to, with the good, the bad and the ugly all happening side by side. I can’t wait to watch the season unfold. – Siyabonga Sithole

Uncomfortable replacements

The last season of Rockville ended with a shocker – and a whole lot of anticipation for season three.

It was great to get back into the thick of things, with a plot twist I never expected. Who would have thought that Lindiwe Mabaso, a former prostitute with a dark cloud over her head, would be making her way down the aisle to wed her high school sweetheart, Sandile? It looks as though married life will prove to be a struggle for these two.

To my delight, most of the cast members from season two have returned, saving us the confusion and dismay we found ourselves in when Generations The Legacy began. But I find myself uncomfortable with the replacement of Mbuli by Pheto, Sipho Ngwenya by the pretty Fezile Makhanya and Minnie Dlamini by Nunu Khumalo.

I quite enjoyed last season’s dynamics, but these new faces seem to be missing the bar in terms of performance. Perhaps Boity Thulo and Connie should hold an acting seminar for them. With that said, I am more than happy to give them the chance they deserve, only if they promise to deliver the performance the viewers deserve.

I was thrilled by the introduction of Dandala. He brings an edge of gangsterism to prison life that is borderline scary, and I’m now keen to see how the whole prison plot plays out.

I suspected from the first episode that Dudu (Phetho) would become the show’s new wicked protagonist. With her morals now out the window, will she successfully run the Diamond Club? – Thembisile Dzonzi
