Roger De SA jumps ship

2014-01-31 18:07

Roger De Sa has jumped the Orlando Pirates’ ship and found a new home at Ajax Cape Town.

While the transfer season is usually characterised by player drama, De Sa’s departure is striking as coaches hardly move during the transfer season.

The former Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits goalkeeper has resigned with immediate effect and will take over the head coach spot left vacant by Muhsin Ertugral, who has reportedly returned home to Turkey for personal reasons.

Assistant coach Eric Tinkler will take over De Sa’s job in a caretaking capacity.

De Sa was appointed as Pirates’ head coach in September 2012 and took the club to several cup finals.

However, he was unable to gain silverware on each occasion and failed to defend the league title in his time there.

He took them to the CAF Champions League final, where they were beaten by Egyptian giants Al-Ahly over two legs.

In a statement on the club’s website, De Sa said he was grateful to Orlando Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza for the opportunity of coaching a club as big as Pirates.

“I will always be appreciative and I take with me fond memories of my time at the club,” said De Sa.

“I wish everybody at the club including the technical team, players and management success in the future.”
