Ronaldinho omission ‘a blow for World Cup’

2010-05-12 17:32

The illogical and incomprehensible omission of two-time former

World Player of the Year Ronaldinho from Brazil’s squad is a major blow for the

World Cup itself – no matter what effect it might have on the prospects of the

five-times champions in the tournament.

The scathing indictment of Brazilian coach Carlos Dunga and his

decision to axe the irresistible soccer genius and drawcard from his 23-man

squad for the tournament next month was made today by local organising committee

(LOC) CEO Danny Jordaan.

At the same time, Jordaan lamented the actions of coaches who

seemingly demonstrated prejudices against great players to satisfy their egos at

the detriment of their own teams and the events involved in a wider sense –

pointing to what had happened to players like Eric Cantona and Romario in

previous World Cups.

“I sometimes think these coaches are imbued in the belief thay are

gods and are out to prove they can can do anything they wish, right or wrong,”

added Jordaan. “They become blinded by this sense of power.

“Ronaldinho, it must be said, is a soccer genius with talents

enjoyed by few in the game – both past and present,” said the LOC’s CEO, “and

anyone with an insight into the sport must recognise this. Now that he has

recovered from a slump of form, it should have been accepted by someone of

Dunga’s experience to select him as a matter of course.

“Now the World Cup itself will suffer,” lamented Jordaan, “and it’s

all rather sad and unfortunate.”
