Rural kids prepare for party

2010-12-21 14:31

About 2 000 Transkei children, including busloads of orphans, are expected to attend this year’s Christmas party at Mkankatho village near Libode, organisers said today.

The yearly event will for the first time be run by a foundation established by Eastern Cape health department official Sizwe Kupelo.

The foundation said in a statement that a number of businesses had donated goods and services for the party.

Buses would be used to fetch children from orphanages in Mthatha, and from other villages in the Libode area.

The Nyandeni local municipality had agreed to sponsor equipment such as a jumping castle, a boxing ring and slides for the day.

Toys would be distributed to some 1 500 children, and a number of school bags handed out.

As was customary, an ox would be slaughtered for the party-goers’ enjoyment.

The Mkankatho Christmas party was first held in 2008, with funds from an award Kupelo received for “service beyond the call of duty” in the health department.

The foundation also said that a Flagstaff civils contractor last month completed levelling a soccer field at the village, and upgrading a road to the village and several others in the area.

These services were also rendered free of charge.
