SA can’t shoulder all the blame

2015-04-26 16:00

Undoubtedly, many South Africans will share the views of Mathatha Tsedu, “Why are we failing as Africans?” (City Press, April 19 2015), in highlighting the self-hate that underlines the xenophobic attacks on other Africans.

But what is disturbing about this analysis and the many interpretations of who is responsible for this evil is the overarching generalisation that South Africans are equally culpable.

In facing this challenging and emotive issue, let us not ignore reality. The other side of the coin shows that an overwhelming majority of South Africans are against this lower-than-animalistic behaviour.

What is missing from the debate is the burden and sacrifice South Africa makes to accommodate migrants. Our country is a global leader in absorbing the highest number of migrants – legal and illegal. South Africa plays a massive role in alleviating the political and economic problems of many African countries by taking in their migrants.

Xenophobia must not thrive and migrants must be protected, but let’s not make millions of innocent South Africans feel guilty about it.
