SA claim five medals on day one

The South African team have claimed five medals in the first day of the Junior Athletics Championships in Gaborone, Botswana.

The medals include one gold, three silver and a bronze.

In the girls’ discus Ischke Senekal produced a personal best of 49.9m to win gold yesterday, and compatriot Simone Meyer won bronze.

Pole vaulters Jeanne Van Dyk and Mariska Smit shared the silver medal in the junior women’s pole vault. Both cleared 3.35m. The gold went to Tunisia’s Mahfoundhi Dorra with 3.4m.

Roelf Pienaar won South Africa’s third silver and fifth medal of the championships in the long jump.

Mpho Maputa, the SA junior champion, did not finish the long jump competition due to a recurring injury, but opted instead to focus on the triple jump in today’s finals.

After five events on day one of the decathlon competition, Jason Roux is positioned third with 3 290 points.
