SA first, Mr Zuma

2011-06-18 11:09

President Jacob Zuma’s snubbing of tens of thousands of South Africans who commemorated Youth Day on Wednesday was in bad taste.

Instead of attending government’s official celebration on June 16 where he was booked to speak, Zuma chose to attend the ANC Youth League’s elective congress. This saw him running late by almost four hours for the Soweto celebrations.

With his political standing under threat, Zuma displayed that his ambitions of a second term as ANC leader were more important and also gave credence to claims that the league was kingmaker within the party.

Zuma should remember it was not only the ANC or its youth league that chose him to be president of the country, but millions of South Africans who gave him that opportunity.

To arrive four hours late at an already badly organised event didn’t dignify his office or the memory of those who died on June 16 1976.

Zuma has to face the very same people he snubbed this week for re-election in 2014. That is, if he survives the ANC’s Mangaung conference.

Hopefully, Zuma learnt this week that the electorate is more important than his own party.
