SA kids hurt in UK fire attack

2011-09-21 14:09

Two South African children suffered serious burns after their mother’s ex-boyfriend set himself alight in their house.

The Cape Argus reported today that the two were fighting for their lives in a British hospital.

Police believed the man doused himself with petrol and lit a flame after locking all the doors of the house in Altrincham, near Manchester.
This followed an early morning row on Monday.

It was thought the man – named as David Potts – had been ditched by girlfriend Tracy Jones but returned to her house to carry out the suicide revenge attack.

Jones (40) and her three children from two marriages, Zak (4), Shaun (15) and Cailin (18) were being treated for burns and smoke inhalation in hospital.

Shaun and Cailin were born from Jones’s marriage to South African Steve van Straaten.

Neighbours said they awoke in the early hours of Monday to screaming and the sound of smashing glass.

The Greater Manchester police chief, Superintendent Mark Roberts, said: “This is an extremely serious and tragic incident that has left one person dead and four others critically injured.”
