SA movie scores US deal

2014-11-10 09:56

A South African movie, Leading Lady, has secured a cinematic distribution deal in the United States.

“After a very successful reception at the Seattle International Film Festival the producers swiped their credit cards to go kick down doors in Los Angeles,” Starburst Promotions said today.

“Leading Lady was represented by Jon Bonnell from Summer Hill Films and the US rights were sold to Freestyle Releasing – a reputable distribution company in the US behind mini and major studio films.”

The movie, directed and produced by Henk Pretorius and Llewelynn Greeff, will be released in South Africa on November 28.

It tells the story of an idealistic British drama school teacher, Jodi Rutherford, who persuades an initially reserved and rather dour South African farmer Kobus Willemse to prepare her for a role in a major film as an Afrikaans war heroine.

In return, Jodi undertakes to organise and direct an annual concert on the Willemse farm.

Leading Lady stars Jurassic World’s Katie McGrath, Ally McBeal’s Gil Bellows, and South Africa’s Bok van Blerk.

It will be screened in the US summer holidays next year.
