SA netball team pulls out of Games

2011-08-11 14:52

The South African senior netball team have pulled out from the All Africa Games (AAG).

The Proteas were due to take part at the 10th All-Africa Games from September 3 to September 18 in Maputo, Mozambique.

Netball South Africa (NSA) president Mimi Mthethwa said the team withdrew because most of their senior players would not be available for the event.

“We have no choice but to withdraw our team. Our players are complaining about incentives. We don’t have enough money to meet them halfway. Most of them are working and have to take unpaid leave. Some of the players had to postpone their studies to go to the World Championship in Singapore and they are trying to catch up,” said Mthethwa.

Mthethwa said they would not be sending a B-team to Maputo as it would affect their ranking.“We had an agreement IFNA to rank all the teams who would be taking part in the AAG.

If we take a weak team to Maputo, it would have negative results for our current ranking.

“We really need financial backing from the government, we are still waiting for a date with the Minister of Sport,” she added.

South Africa are ranked fifth in the world.
