SA performs 210 abortions a day – Aaron Motsoaledi

2013-11-01 12:25

Abortions are performed in South Africa at an average rate of more than 200 a day, according to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.

In a written reply to a parliamentary question today, he said 82 920 abortions were performed across all nine provinces during the period April 2012 to April this year.

More than a quarter of these were in Gauteng (21 794), followed by the Eastern Cape (14 357).

It is understood Motsoaledi’s reply refers to abortions performed at public-health institutions.

Dividing the total by the number of days in the 13-month period gives an average of 210 abortions a day.

The minister was responding to a question posed by African Christian Democratic Party MP Cheryllyn Dudley, whose party is opposed to abortion.
