SA star Magakwe faces world’s fastest in 1st Diamond race

2014-05-31 18:44

In a few hours’ time, SA ace sprinter Simon Magakwe will face two men currently boasting the world’s fastest 100m times, when he lines up in the IAAF Diamond League in Oregon, US.

The South African will pit his personal best time of 9.98 – a national record – against leading US sprinter Justin Gatlin, who is the fastest man in the world this year at 9.87 seconds.

Magakwe told City Press on arrival in the US on Tuesday that he was “ready to race against the top dogs”.

He was showing off pictures on his Whatsapp profile, posing with 800m world record holder David Rudisha of Kenya at the hotel.

“They are all here, including Gatlin,” he said.

Magakwe currently rates fourth behind Gatlin, Jamaica’s Kemarley Brown (9.93) and Jimmy Vicaut of France (9.95) on the IAAF list.

In addition to the already strong field of men who dipped under 10 seconds this year, Jamaican Nesta Carter will also be in the line-up.

The Prefontaine Classic will start at 10pm SA time and Magakwe is expected to run at 10.34pm.
