SA tunes to Africa

2011-02-25 10:12

A duo of debutant singers has come out of nowhere to set records and blaze a trail of success.

A recent survey has revealed that Liquideep’s Fairytale was the most played song of 2010. The tune that became a runaway club hit and a lounge essential tops both the local and international playlist charts, having been played 5?962 times on radio, according to the Mediaguide statistics which monitors radio plays.

Additionally, the track won song of the year award at the MTV Africa Music Awards last year in Nigeria, proof that even the continent is taking note of Liquideep. The band’s other smash hit Alone also features in the top 20.

It is interesting to note that the gap between Fairytale and its runner-up is almost triple. Show Dem, the JR song featuring HHP, was a World Cup advertising theme and a massive radio hit, but it only clocked in 2?401 air plays.

Little known group Crazy White Boy secured the third position with Love You Better featuring Rue-Groove, the house track that garnered 2?329 plays.

House DJ of the moment, Black Coffee, is sitting pretty on position six with 2?101 plays for Juju featuring Zakes Bantwini and Umlilo by Big Nuz managed to score 1?966 plays to end up in eighth place.

Winnie Khumalo cemented her star status by earning 1?815 plays and a spot in the top 10 for her hit Live My Life.

While it is agreed that gospel music is the best-selling genre in the land, not a single track cracked the top 100 chart.

Internationally, while the world has gone gaga over Lady Gaga, local radio prefers something with more soul. Alicia Keys’s Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart was the most played international song with 4?370 rotations.

In Britain and the US, Katy Perry’s California Gurls topped the playlist charts but here at home it is placed sixth with 3?553 plays. Waka Waka, the World Cup song by Shakira lies seventh with 3?482 plays. And Justin Bieber missed out of the top 10 spot with 3?332 plays for Baby featuring Ludacris, enough only for 11th spot. Others in the top 20 are Need You Know by Lady Antebellum (3?180 plays), Alejandro by Lady Gaga (3?084 plays), OMG by Usher featuring Will.i.am (3?026 plays), Wavin’ Flag by K’Naan (2?930 plays) and Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys (2?918 plays).
