SA women take charge at qualifiers

South Africa picked up their second straight win to take control at the top of Group A in the 2013 Women’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers in Bangladesh today.

Shandre Fritz, who made 93 runs, and Player-of-the-Match Trisha Chetty, who contributed 95, shared a 200-run opening partnership as the South Africans thumped the US by 198 runs in their second match.

The opening pair laid a solid platform and the SA women reached 343/5 after winning the toss and opting to bat.

In reply, the US were restricted to 145/9, with 18-year-old spinner Dane van Niekerk taking 3/29 to lead the SA attack.

Yesterday’s opening day of the tournament, the South Africans put up a strong fight against Sri Lanka to secure a six-run victory.

Bundled out for 114 runs, with Fritz making a valuable 61, the SA women looked dead and buried.

Spin bowler Sunette Loubser, however, tore through Sri Lanka’s batting order, returning 5/27 as they were dismissed for 108 runs with 10 balls to spare.

The SA women player their next match against the Netherlands on Friday.
