SA youths off to Spain junior champs

2012-03-30 11:19

Four World Junior Championships qualifiers were recorded today at the ongoing Yellow Pages SA Youth, Junior and Schools Championships in Germiston on the East Rand.

Sprinters Philippa van der Merwe, Siphelo Ngqabaza, and Fana Mofokeng all dipped under their respective qualification standards to earn a berth in the provisional team to the Junior World Championships in Spain in July.

Long jumper Duwayne Boer also produced a qualifying leap, which was 3cm above the required 7.65m.

Van der Merwe won her heat in 11.65 – the fastest junior time this year – which was also under the 11.70 qualifying mark. She was due to line up in the final in the afternoon.

Ngqabaza beat the 10.54 qualifier with an identical time of 10.45 in the heats and the semi-final. In another heat, Mofokeng, Ngqabaza’s Free State Schools teammate, ran 10.52.

Boer was part of Team SA that won three medals at the World Youth Championships in France last year.

Albert Janki, who won bronze at the Lille Games, jumped 7.42m on the opening day yesterday with another horizontal jumps’ rising star, Mpho Maphuta, winning the youth long jump on the first day.

The Germiston event will end tomorrow.
