SAA gets new CEO

2013-04-19 14:27

South African Airways (SAA) has a new chief executive.

Monwabisi Kalawe has officially appointed as the airline’s new CEO.

Dudu Myeni, acting chairperson of the SAA Board of Directors, announced the appointment today.

The airline has been without a permanent CEO since October 2012 after Siza Mzimela resigned from the position.

Kalawe is currently the MD of the local branch of Compass Group Plc, a global food services company. He does have a background in aviation having managed Acsa’s Cape Town airport a few years ago.

Fin24 understands that the current acting CEO, Nico Bezuidenhout, may become the airline’s chief operations officer (COO).

“The Board worked tirelessly to find a suitable leader who will lead by example and stabilise the internal environment while working towards ensuring good corporate governance within the airline,” said Myeni.

Kalawe will join SAA in the next few weeks and is still completing his term at Compass Group.

He will be given a new turnaround strategy that has been developed over the past six months, to implement. The turnaround strategy aims to return the airline to profitability as soon as possible.
