SABC in squabble over Afcon broadcasting rights

2011-09-02 09:18

Bafana Bafana’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Niger in Niamey may not be broadcast on the SABC, according to reports.

The SABC told The New Age that the rights holders, French-based company Sport Five, had requested a fee of R5 million, which the public broadcaster believed was an excessive rate, to show the game.“

The SABC maintains the rights fee is unreasonably high, unsustainable and way above the universal market rate,” the SABC told the newspaper.

“The SABC was even willing to make a better offer on the going rate, despite the fact that Niger was not a top-10 team in Africa.”

However, Sport Five senior vice-president Iddriss Akki reportedly said the SABC had been charged the standard rate. The rights holders were not willing to budge on the fee, but they would approach other broadcasters.

“We have made an offer for the South Africa match and we can’t negotiate the day before the game,” Akki said in a separate report in The Star.

“My only concern is making sure the South African people get to see the game, and I am sure we can do a deal with a South African broadcaster.”
