SABC must broadcast M&G apology this week

2011-06-21 12:28

The SABC must broadcast a Broadcasting Complaints Commission of SA ruling in favour of Mail & Guardian journalist Sam Sole by June 28, the commission said.

The case relates to an SABC broadcast on November 3 last year in which businessman Robert Gumede alleged that Sole took a bribe and that the newspaper had a racial bias.

The commission found that Gumede’s allegations were given air time, but that the M&G’s response was given insufficient coverage.

The SABC was reprimanded for broadcasting an unbalanced report and was given until March 30 to broadcast a summary of the commission judgment.

But it then tried to appeal the ruling, which it lost.

The commission, in a judgment released today, denied a bid by the SABC to delay the broadcast of the ruling against the public broadcaster.

“The tribunal has permitted SABC3 to broadcast the summary on or before June 28,” ruled the commission.

The SABC had wanted to delay the broadcast by trying to turn to the Complaints and Compliance Committee of the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) after it lost the appeal.

The broadcaster wanted Icasa to order the commission tribunal to extend the date of the broadcast.

But the commission found that the SABC did not have the right to approach the Icasa committee.
