Safa: Honour Bafana call-ups or lose place in squad for good

2014-08-08 16:42

Players who don’t honour call-ups to Bafana Bafana will be dealt with harshly and won’t be eligible for selection for future national team matches.

The SA Football Association (Safa) issued this warning during the official unveiling of new Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba today.

Mashaba also emphasised that “any patriotic player will play in this team - underline the word patriotic”.

“It’s not a good thing (not to honour a call-up) because it is denting the image of the country,” he said, adding that the matter was “not going to be addressed by me”.

“I only draft a list of players then give it to the manager who then forwards it to the CEO (Dennis Mumble).”

About the consequences for disregarding call-ups, Mumble said: “If a player has no legitimate reason, we will put him in front of a disciplinary committee (DC). They are not going to be made eligible or available for the national team in future. The DC will decide that.”

Mumble revealed that they were busy prosecuting the players who turned down the call-ups for the Australia and New Zealand games two months ago.
