Safa is not being serious

2013-01-06 10:00

As with almost everything they touch, the South African Football Association (Safa), has managed to turn the Fifa report on Bafana Bafana match-fixing into a big, fat joke.

Instead of dealing with the matter thoroughly and applying their minds – a term they like using – they have turned the whole thing into one big personality struggle.

The emergency committee was too quick off the mark in suspending Nematandani – they called it “special leave” – and the four staff members mentioned in the report.

More so as Nemtandani’s name was not even on the list of people the report suggested should be investigated further. On Friday, the emergency committee was made to swallow tons of humble pie as all their decisions were reversed by Safa’s national executive committee.

The report has since been referred to a legal committee, as required.

Some individuals saw this as an opportunity for grandstanding. It never crossed their minds what the ramifications would be of suspending their head on the eve of a major continental event like the Africa Cup of Nations.

All their focus was on sidelining Nematandani and thus weakening his position before the September election. This has been a serious Achilles heel for South African football.

The allegations made in the report are serious and must be dealt with thoroughly.

Safa should stop playing the man and play the ball and deal with issues and not individuals.
