Safa pays tribute to former Bafana coach ‘Styles’

The South African Football Association (Safa) has paid tribute to former Bafana Bafana coach April “Styles” Phumo, who died yesterday.

Safa president Kirsten Nematandani described Phumo as a man of integrity and a true professional who contributed immensely to South African football. “It is a sad loss and our condolences to his family and friends.

Football has lost a true giant who was never selfish and always ready to serve his country,” said Nematandani in Marrakech where he attended the national under-23’s CAF Championship match against Ivory Coast yesterday.

Nematandani’s sentiments were echoed by coach Ephraim Shakes Mashaba, who said he was lost for words with the passing of Phumo.

“I used to call him a gentle giant because he would never harm a fly. He was bright and very knowledgeable about the game. Sometime back I was told he was in hospital and I had planned to go visit him but because of this tournament I couldn’t.

I will also miss his funeral but my condolences to his family and friends,” said Mashaba. Phumo guided Bafana to the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and has also coached National First Division sides Nathi Lions and Atlie.
