Safa says new sponsor will be named soon

2011-02-12 14:59

The South African Football Association (Safa) said again today that it was on the verge of signing a contract with a new kit sponsor.

“We have worked extremely hard to secure a technical sponsor that we believe will fully support the association’s programmes,” said acting Safa CEO Pinky Lehoko.

“We have now put a structure in place to facilitate the implementation process that will enable us to reach our desired targets on time.

“We are looking forward to unveil the association’s technical sponsor in the near future.”

Former Safa CEO Leslie Sedibe said before he stepped down from his position last week, the federation expected to sign a contract with sports equipment and apparel manufacturer Puma in time for Bafana Bafana to wear the new kit in an international friendly against Kenya on Wednesday.

The announcement was expected to be made on Monday, but the media conference was called off at the last minute and Bafana turned out in old kit.
Safa was also reported to have held negotiations with Nike after a 12-year partnership with Adidas came to an end in November.

The national football body said it had combined with the prospective technical partner to set up an operational team to finalise the sponsorship launch and specifics of the kit, in particular women’s gear, including soccer boots.

The first operations meeting took place yesterday at Safa House.

Samples of the kit were discussed and the operational team would go through an approval process that would be completed within four weeks.

Safa said the new kit for all the national teams would go into production from March and the process would take about six months to complete.
