Safety tips for ATM users over the festive period

2010-11-15 10:08

The police have released a string of safety tips for ATM users over the festive season.

“Members of the community should be on the alert to ensure they don’t fall victim to these criminals,” said Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

It was important for ATM users to take extra caution during the festive season because criminals were on the prowl looking for easy pickings, Mdunge said.

“If possible, use ATMs you are familiar with or choose well-lit, well-situated ATMs,” he said.

Mdunge urged people not to use ATMs when they were laden with shopping parcels.

“You can’t concentrate on criminals, your transaction and bystanders all at the same time,” he said.

People were also urged not to accept help from strangers and not to give PIN codes to strangers – even those who claimed to be working for the banks.

“Criminals work in teams. One will distract you, while the other will steal your card and money,” Mdunge said.

ATM users should be on the lookout for foreign or suspicious devices attached to or close to the ATM that may be used to scan cards or read PIN numbers.

“If you suspect that you are being followed, get yourself to the nearest public place or police station as quickly as possible, or approach a police official.”
