Sars’ Oupa Magashula resigns

2013-07-12 15:07

Sars commissioner Oupa Magashula resigned today, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has announced.

On March 24, City Press reported that SA Revenue Service boss Magashula was at the centre of a jobs-for-pals scandal involving a convicted drug dealer.

Magashula’s resignation comes after he was presented with the findings on Tuesday of an investigation led by retired judge Jak Yacoob.

The key findings of the investigation include, according to a Sars statement:

That Magashula:

» Had "placed the reputation and credibility of Sars at risk";

» Was "much less frank" with (Yacoob's) committee than would be expected of a person in his position; and

» Had interacted with convicted drug dealer Timmy Marimuthu more times than he had initially admitted to the minister and the committee.

The investigation found no evidence that a crime had been committed.

However, it was unable to probe allegations of undue influence because Marimuthu did not agree to an interview.
