Sars to tighten control at Waterkloof

2013-05-28 08:47

The SA Revenue Service plans to tighten controls at the Waterkloof Air Force Base and other ports of entry.

The move was prompted by the incident on April 30, when a private jet carrying guests who were to attend the Gupta wedding landed at Waterkloof in Pretoria without following proper channels, The Star newspaper reported today.

In written reply to a parliamentary question by Democratic Alliance MP Tim Harris, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said Waterkloof was “not a commercial point of entry in normal circumstances”, but would be reviewed following the Gupta incident.

Harris had asked Gordhan why Sars customs officials were not present at Waterkloof to ensure that customs procedures were followed.

“The Sars management has been instructed to review the lessons arising from this event and make recommendations to the minister of finance on changes that need to be made to tighten and enforce customs control at the relevant ports of entry,” Gordhan was quoted as saying.

He said Waterkloof was not classified as an international airport.
