Scene City : A fashion circus comes to the city

2012-09-08 12:50

When I was at school, there were times when I wanted to run away to join the circus. The only thing that put me off? The outfits!

And then Sandton City and Audi introduced the Fashion Circus show this past weekend, and all was forgiven.

The launch, where the mall’s stores showcased next season’s collections, saw fashionistas being mesmerised by models in glam clown make-up and hairstyles reminiscent of Helena Bonham Carter’s Red Queen character from Alice in Wonderland. Absolutely gorge!

If I had seen something like that, my little brown school case would have been packed ages ago.

Top international brands – such as Mango, Guess, Steve Madden, Pringle, Forever New, Country Road, Trenery and Diesel – showed their latest collections alongside local labels and stores such as Nicci Boutique, Marion and Lindie, Edgars, Stuttafords and Woolworths.

The last models to take to the ramp were a host of celebrities in a glittery collection from Pallu – including Lira, Zizo Beda, Phuti Khomo and Shashi Naidoo. The owner, Peta Eggierth-Symes, watched from her front-row seat near Idols judge Randall Abrahams, who was there to support his rumoured girlfriend and MC of the event, Anele Mdoda, who even managed to coax a smile from him with her banter.

After the show, Eggierth-Symes expressed her relief at getting it over with.

“I never do fashion shows because we never keep more than one dress in each style. But I made an exception in this case,” said the pink-clad socialite.

There was a bevy of beautiful women, including new bride Jo-Ann Strauss, who was wearing an Italian designer dress she bought 12 years ago that still fits her like a glove. I almost missed another former Miss South Africa, Peggy-Sue Khumalo, who was clad in a power suit with a knee-length jacket, looking every inch the consummate investment banker she is.

The most popular person at the event was Olympic gold medallist Cameron van der Burgh, who took a turn on the catwalk too. R&B trio Denim also modelled some clothing from Ben Sherman while serenading the guests.
