Scene City: SA Fashion Week drips with glamour

2012-03-31 12:50

A curious thing happened on Thursday night, the first of SA Fashion Week at the Crown Plaza hotel in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

There were rumours that designers had been banned from using celebrities as ramp models and unhappiness in some quarters, with designers saying their ranges had been tailor-made for their famous ambassadors.

But what do you know? The first batch of models to walk the ramp turned out to be celebrities.

The Sheer Glamour Collection by Motions and TRESemmé kicked off dramatically with Minnie Dlamini wearing a full-length dress made by floral artist Franz Grabe from 1 800 fresh red roses.

The actress was officially announced as the brand ambassador for Motions hair care products.

From then on, it was one celeb after the other with Mbali Maphumulo (DJ Black Coffee’s wife) following Dlamini in a lace Rubicon dress while her hubby took pictures of her.

Sonia Sedibe, Real Goboza’s Pearl Thusi – who delighted the crowd when she flashed her long legs – Pabi Moloi, who got the loudest cheers, Top Billing’s Sinazo Yolwa and others walked the ramp to the crowd’s wild cheering.

Other designers who showed their designs were Black Coffee, whose tutu capes put a smile on Bonang Matheba’s face, seated in the front row next to stylist Nthato Mashishi, Tiaan Nagel, Colleen Eitzen, Gideon, Vesselina Pentcheva, Gavin Rajah and Clive Rundle.

Rajah showed a few garments from his Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Joburg collection. Good way to get kudos twice, eh?

Other fashion loving celebs included Thembi Seete looking trendy in a black Gert-Johan Coetzee leather peplum dress and Poppy Ntshongwana, who worked double-time as MC/DJ at the hotel lobby where guests had their pre-drinks.

Also saw Somizi Mhlongo, who was unusually under-blinged for this fashion risk-taker.

The models all sported hairstyles designed by Ursula Stephen hair-stylist to international stars like Rihanna and Keyshia Cole, and leading Mzansi hairstylist Matthew Mansoor.

After the show, the guests took off to trendy Joburg spot Randlords to party the night away at the official opening party of fashion week.
