Celebs show support for shisa nyama contest

Cooking shows are the hot new thing to watch these days. On the heels of the success of Masterchef SA, SABC3 has come up with the idea of having ordinary South Africans compete to become the Ultimate Braai Master and win R500 000.

The channel launched the show on a chilly night at House Higgo in Northcliff, Joburg, under an open marquee – which we’ll assume was supposed to simulate a camp atmosphere.

Guests mingled as the chefs prepared food off braai stands, with the delicious meat aroma helping to chase off the cold.

Spotted basking in the tantalising aromas were actress Sophie Ndaba and rappers Jr and Shugasmakx. The two hip-hoppers are going to take part in the next We Run Jozi 10km marathon in October.

“I’ve talked him into joining myself, Sphectacula, Siya Ngwekazi and a couple of other guys,” says Jr.

Statuesque model Mirriam Ngomani, who has been away from the spotlight, was there alongside the ever-present guest, Expresso’s Liezel van der Westhuizen, who gave a middle finger to the cold by donning a short, red dress.

The MC was Top Billing’s Lorna Maseko who kept urging guests to drink something to keep themselves warm while the show’s host, Justin Bonello, expressed his excitement at bringing the show to our screens.

From the first episode we watched at the event, it looks like we might have an original cooking show that will keep braai stands busy come this Heritage Day or, as others call it, National Braai Day.
